For most of the Royal Canadian Air Force’s helicopter crews, the job is a pain in the neck. In the civilian population, the prevalence of neck pain is estimated to be only about 15 per cent. But the department was unable to isolate the number of disability claims that it received specifically from helicopter flight crews. Air forces in the United States, Britain and across Europe have identified a similar prevalence of neck pain among helicopter crews, at similar rates. But more futuristic fixes for the pervasive problem facing helicopter crews may have to wait, the report said.
