In our own planning at the Asia New Zealand Foundation, we have been pondering and preparing for very different scenarios. One trend we calculate is likely to continue is that the discussion about China and about New Zealand’s relationship with our largest trading partner gets more heated, and at times difficult. Australia’s Asia Taskforce released its final report on that country’s Asia engagement last week, and one of its five recommendations is that Australia learns “to navigate a more complex relationship with China”. It notes the risks of doing business in and with China have increased dramatically. And we all need to better understand where China is coming from in the way it acts and speaks, and what it values.
