Acting road policing manager, inspector Rupert Friend at the scene of Monday's fatal accident. Police say 29-year-old Leo Thomas Chittenden from Napier and 11-year-old Te Whararere Hunuhunu from Opotiki were killed in Monday's fatal crash near Taupō. The Hawke's Bay man and Bay of Plenty boy died after the two-car collision on State Highway 5 at Rangitaiki. The area lacked cellphone service and crash witnesses went to nearby Rangitaiki Tavern to seek help after the crash at about 1.25pm on December 23. Three fire engines, two ambulances, a helicopter and multiple police cars reportedly attended the fatal crash scene.
