Police shut down operations of Mihiriga Kenda religious sect in KiambuPolice in Kiambu have closed down all operations of Mihiriga Kenda religious group on grounds of operating without a legal permit. Authorities say they were tipped off by the public following an incident where a member of the religious group committed suicide after killing his mother over a disagreement about the sect’s activities. Speaking after raiding the sect headquarters at Gathangari village in Githunguri Kiambu, Githunguri Deputy County Commissioner David Juma, said that the government has established that the religious group was operating on an expired permit. According to locals, the group has been perpetrating itself as one of the Kiama groups from the Agikuyu community but on their part the local elders have refuted any association with the sect, saying their teachings go contrary to their beliefs.
