NPCIL for joint ventures with state firms to augment generation capacity


Atomic energy and space minister Jitendra Singh said the country’s nuclear power capacity will have commercial operation of 6,780 megawatt by the end of this year when a 1,000 MW second unit of Kudankulam project will start commercial production. New Delhi: Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL) has set up two joint ventures with state-owned energy companies and is exploring more partnerships with other state entities to augment generation capacity, atomic energy and space minister Jitendra Singh informed Rajya Sabha on Thursday. The company has held preliminary talks with Oil and Natural Gas Corp. and the Indian Railways to set up nuclear power plants, said Singh. At present it is generating non-commercial power. The minister also informed that state-run Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Ltd. is making a prototype fast breeder reactor of 500 MW at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu.
