This week, at a UN conference on peacekeeping that Canada hosted, the federal government unveiled its peacekeeping proposal. And instead of the promised unit of 750 peacekeepers, it can now be any number up to but not exceeding 750 people. So the Liberals have come up with a decent plan. Until the UN massively overhauls both its operations and accountability mechanisms, Canada should maintain a distance from such missions. That’s unfortunate, because an efficient and accountable peacekeeping force could have the potential to make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable people.
