NHS worker who died with Covid was refused shielding status despite history of illness

Doctors CT scanned Mr Macalalad and found a blood clot on one of his lungs. Post-mortem tests confirmed Mr Macalalad was infected with the virus at the time of death. In 2011, Mr Macalalad was diagnosed with type two non-insulin dependent diabetes, which is associated with higher levels of breathing issues than among the general population. Though he recovered from the surgery, Mr Macalalad was still concerned, and told his GP about those worries. The doctor told him did not fit the criteria for shielding, despite his extensive history of respiratory complaints.
