The findings of an online IPPR/YouGov poll of 1,006 healthcare professionals in mid-February suggested 8,000 midwives and 100,000 nurses were at risk of departing. It came as ministers face mounting demands to boost their offer of an “insulting” 1% hike for NHS workers – which is a real-terms cut if inflation reaches expected levels of up to 1.8%. “Proper mental and psychological support services need to be made available to all nursing staff. “Failing to act on all of the warning signs will make recovery of the NHS a challenge that will place patient care at risk.”
