The NHS will spend tens of millions of pounds picking up doctors’ pensions bills to help avert a staffing catastrophe this winter. Ministers will implement plans today to enable doctors to take on overtime without being clobbered by punitive taxes. Today Health Secretary Matt Hancock will issue a formal instruction to the NHS to pick up some of doctors’ bills. The arrangement is complex but, in short, the NHS will pay the pension taxes accrued by any doctor working overtime this financial year. It comes after an estimated two thirds of surgeons had slashed their hours to reduce bills.
