OTTAWA — Inspired by the left-wing populist campaign run by Bernie Sanders in the United States, Manitoba MP Niki Ashton officially announced her bid for the federal NDP leadership Tuesday. “It wasn’t supposed to be this way and it doesn’t have to be this way. Informing that vision was a cross-country tour on precarious work for the millennial generation, which Ashton undertook while serving as the NDP’s jobs critic. … I didn’t meet any millennials that identified as ‘middle class.’ Many identified as having grown up in a middle-class environment,” she said. I do believe the NDP is well-placed to do that.”It is the second time Ashton has tossed her hat in the ring for the NDP leadership, having run against Tom Mulcair in 2012.
