NBA makes progress on mental health, but is it ready for Royce White?

The NBA announced last week it would hire a director of mental health and wellness, a significant step for a league that previously addressed mental health under its drug policy. Royce White leads the National Basketball League of Canada in scoring with an average 24.7 points a game. “It’s really special to see the work the mental health community has done, and it’s brought the sports world through a bottleneck,” White said. The same year White and the Rockets clashed over a management plan for his anxiety, long-time NBA guard Keyon Dooling confronted his own mental health crisis after a stranger groped him in a public bathroom. “It’s starting to be destigmatized because there are champions of the message,” said Dooling, while mentioning White, DeRozan and retired WNBA star Chamique Holdsclaw.
