NASA rover detects some of the oldest evidence of water flowing on Mars

A 'selfie' taken by NASA's Perseverance Mars rover, made up of 62 individual images, on July 23, in this image released on September 10, 2025. Mars, like Earth, formed roughly 4.5 billion years ago, meaning this delta existed relatively early in its history. Because water is considered crucial to the possibility of past life on Mars, the mounting evidence of its wet past is of particular interest. Mars, now cold and desolate, long ago possessed a thicker atmosphere and warmer climate, allowing for liquid water on its surface. NASA's Perseverance rover took this selfie inside Jezero Crater in its northern hemisphere of Mars on May 10, 2025.
