Myanmar gambling ban leads to Chinese 'exodus'

PHNOM PENH: Hundreds of thousands of Chinese nationals have left Cambodia after the country banned all online and arcade gambling operations. Cambodia’s Immigration spokesman General Keo Vanthan said 447,000 Chinese nationals had left the country, including those who held long-term visas, since August last year. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun SenHun Sen said some licensed online gambling operations rigged their games and often threatened those who were not able to repay their gambling debt. Most casinos in the province were owned and managed by Chinese nationals, and workers from those which have shut down have left the country. Preah Sihanouk provincial police chief Major General Chuon Narin said he would crack down on all online and arcade gambling operations in the province, especially in Sihanou-kville.
