Museums now required to hold firearm dealer's licence

Museums must apply for a firearms dealer’s licence to collect, hold and display firearms folling changes to the Arms Legislation Act 2020. (File photo)Museums around New Zealand are now required to hold a firearms dealer’s licence to collect, hold and display firearms and have just over a month to apply for one. Under the new rules, those displaying arms items as the director or curator of a bona fide museum, and those in the business of repairing or modifying arms items, must apply for a firearms dealer’s licence. “Museums are already required to have a standard firearms licence if they hold firearms in their collection. “To now require that they hold an annual firearms dealers licence just adds pointless complexity and cost for no purpose, as museums obviously are not in the business of buying, selling, hiring or manufacturing firearms and are therefore not dealers,” Dodd said.
