Four years after Calgary Stampeder Mylan Hicks was shot while running away from violence, his killer's conviction has been upheld by Alberta's top court. In 2019, following a trial, Lugela, 23, was found guilty of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 18 years. The judges found there was "no basis to interfere with the trial judge's decision." During the trial, witnesses testified Lugela aggressively approached the players at least twice. All of the witnesses testified Hicks was never involved in any altercation.
