Mumbai in civic mess: Potholes, building collapses posing risk to citizen safety?

Hurriyat can't be ignored, banning it will achieve nothing: Farooq Abdullah to India TodayAs Mumbai finds itself struggling to cope with its civic mess in the wake of deaths due to building collapses and potholes on roads, the question one needs to ask is who must be held accountable for this and how can citizens in the Maximum City feel safer. While the collapse of a building in the city's Ghatkopar locality on Tuesday morning claimed 12 lives, deaths due to potholes on roads have been regular occurrences. But barely any steps have been taken to remedy the situation. One needs to ask whether BMC officials, with whom lies the onus of ensuring that roads are pothole-free and buildings strong, need to be booked in criminal cases and whether the Shiv Sena has failed the people of Mumbai. This also brings us to the larger, general question - Are civic bodies in any part of the country the most corrupt?
