Mr Justice Byrne’s copy of the novel was annotated by his wife to draw attention to the salacious bits Alastair Grant/Associated PressA historic copy of Lady Chatterley’s Lover will stay in Britain after a successful campaign to raise almost £60,000. The edition of DH Lawrence’s novel that was consulted by Mr Justice Byrne during the infamous 1960 obscenity trial now belongs to the University of Bristol. The book had been bought by an American at Sotheby’s last year but the government imposed a deferral ban giving others the chance to match the price and keep it in Britain. It had been annotated by the judge’s wife, Lady Byrne, to draw his attention to the salacious passages. She wrote “coarse” and “vulgar” next to some sections and highlighted a reference to “sensuality sharp and searing” on the description of Lady Chatterley’s sex with the gamekeeper Oliver Mellors.
