They kept you wondering where they were going and what the characters were really up to. In many cases, the most captivating characters were female ones, since Sundance 2018, which wraps its 11-day run this weekend, was rich with stories about women and also guided by them — 38 per cent of the films had female directors. There were also noticeably more movies with people of colour in leading roles. Another trend was the high number of accomplished works by first-time feature directors.
