More than 100 Nepalese make the south home

July is proving to be a big month for the Southland Nepalese Society with its first executive meeting held in Gore, along with planning for a public evening to showcase the culture of Nepal in Invercargill. Society secretary Bijoy Regmi said "everyone was pumped up" about finalising the details of becoming incorporated, which took place on Tuesday, and were looking forward to the inaugural Nepal Cultural Evening to be held on July 20. With more than 100 Nepalese now living in Southland, the cultural scene was a far cry from when Regmi, now 32, arrived nine years ago. Fresh from the hilly Parbat district to flat Southland, he studied business at the Southland Institute of Technology (SIT). Their upcoming cultural evening could be a taste of things to come and an annual fixture, organiser Southland Multicultural Council operations manager Meggy Bartlett-McBride said.
