More than 10,000 Irish homes at risk due to flood plan delays


Politicians have called for flood defences to be prioritised and one has accused “climate zealots” of putting lives at risk by objecting to plans. Other long-awaited flood plans have no formal timelines in place and appear no closer to being delivered, despite years of consultation, ground work and engineering studies. The delayed schemes include five flood plans in Cork — including in Midleton, where rising waters after torrential rain last week decimated parts of the town. Storm Babet causes destruction to Cork business​The OPW said flood-relief plans for the town aim to protect 580 properties, including 400 homes. The OPW said the schemes are part of a €1.3bn investment plan involving about 100 flood projects.
