A growing majority of people in Hong Kong support the pro-democracy movement’s core demands a year since the unrest, but backing for protests dropped to 44 percent, a survey conducted for Reuters showed. The survey taken by the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute was the first since the national security law took effect on June 30. Fifty-one percent of respondents in a similar survey in June said they supported the protests surrounding the anti-fugitive bill movement. In the latest survey, only 44 percent said they supported the protests. While protests have been smaller and less frequent amid the pandemic, the poll showed backing for protesters’ key demands has risen.
