After a pause on Thursday evening after the first eruption, new eruptions were occurring by Friday morning in the lower-elevation neighborhood of Leilani Estates, which has a population of about 1,500. The U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaii Volcano Observatory said that since Thursday afternoon, at least three cracks in the ground have developed in the residential neighborhood, causing lava to gush out like a fountain to heights of up to 100 feet. "Additional outbreaks are likely," the USGS said at 7:45 a.m. local time (10:45 a.m. PDT).
