Moderate 5.2 earthquake rattles North Island's east coast


A magnitude 5.2 earthquake has hit the east coast of the North Island, near Gisborne. The quake was 43 kilometres deep and was felt along the entire east coast. GOOGLE The shake was centred near Matawai, a settlement in the Gisborne region. Vanessa Immink tweeted the she felt a huge shake in Whakatāne, and Matt Ensor said it was "really felt" in Ōhope. One Te Kaha, East Cape, resident said their kids went running out of the house, and a commenter from Tirohanga, near Ōpōtiki, said the house "rocked and rolled".
