A Mississauga obstetrician and gynecologist who founded a chain of fertility clinics has been charged with defrauding OHIP, according to the Ontario Provincial Police. Dr. Essam Samy Michael, founder and clinical director of the Astra Fertility Group, has been charged with one count of fraud over $5,000. It’s alleged he billed the Ontario Health Insurance Plan for services that were either not provided or billed inappropriately. Taylore Hald said the exact amount of the fraud is still being determined. There was a search warrant executed, and these charges were laid subsequent to the review of evidence we have done so far,” she said.
