John Ivison: Trudeau Liberals seem as bifurcated on China as the Harper Tories


Justin Trudeau’s visit to China was touted as the spark that would ignite relations that smouldered during the Harper years. Both Trudeau and Stephen Harper have blown hot and cold, exhibiting caution when it comes to a free trade deal, raising concerns about lack of personal freedoms. Jim Flaherty, the finance minister, and the prime minister himself made it clear they were open to persuasion. “We’re Canadians – we travel with our values and we don’t hesitate to share them whenever and wherever we see opportunities,” said the prime minister. But the Trudeau Liberals seem as bifurcated about China as were the Harper Conservatives.
