Mission underway to save dozens of stranded pilot whales in the Coromandel

Around 25 pilot whales are thought to have been stranded in the Coromandel. Email newstips@stuff.co.nzProject Jonah said about 40 pilot whales were seen swimming in shallow, muddy water during high tide about 10am. Part of the pod avoided stranding, however a rescue mission is underway, with 25 whales stranded on the beach. DOC Coromandel district operations manager Nick Kelly, who is at the beach, said there are between 40 and 60 pilot whales involved. People were helping to keep the stranded whales comfortable while the other pod was in shallow water and being shepherded out to sea.
