With the support of various local organisations, Mission to Seafarers Nelson chaplain Peter Akuhata is initiating a Nelson-based port welfare committee. Committee members included representatives from Maritime NZ, International Transport Federation, Nelson City Council, Port Nelson, Mission to Seafarers, NZ Merchant Navy Association, and local shipping agents. Since the 1980s the Anglican-led Mission to Seafarers Nelson has provided support for tens of thousands of seafarers needing fellowship or pastoral assistance. Port Nelson, a supporter of Mission to Seafarers Nelson since the early days, have now provided seafarers free wi-fi access.
