'In areas where the new Covid variant is spreading we are all working together to boost testing and vaccination and to support self-isolation. The PM's official spokesman stressed that the new guidance affecting eight Indian variant hotspot areas was 'not statutory'. The Indian variant has already spread to almost half the country, or 151 out of 315 council areas, and is thought to now be the dominant strain in the country having displaced the Kent variant.
