OTTAWA — As a special committee prepares recommendations for electoral reforms, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau already has a preference, says the minister he put in charge of the process. “Even though the prime minister has a preference, even though I am arriving at a preference for a specific system with certain elements, we’re not going to move ahead unless we have broad support from Canadians,” Monsef said. “There hasn’t been a consensus on any specific system,” she said, based on more than 40 town halls she has held as minister. RelatedAbout nine per cent wanted the status quo, and only three per cent wanted ranked ballots. Trudeau has been criticized for telling Le Devoir last month the motivation for changing the voting system was less “compelling” now Canadians are more satisfied with the government.
