CALGARY — Marianne St-Gelais plans to hide out this weekend during her fiancé Charles Hamelin’s races at the 2016-17 World Cup season opener in short-track speed skating. For proof, click on the viral YouTube video of St-Gelais watching Hamelin’s golden performance in the 500 metres at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. And perhaps it’s all a coincidence, but the three-time Olympic silver medallist posted the best results of her career, with 11 podium appearances in 12 individual events at six World Cups. She won gold in the 1,500 metres at the world championships and silver in her signature distance, the 500 metres. Three-time Olympic gold medallist Charles Hamelin and two-time silver medallist Marianne St-Gelais are the modern-day faces of the sport in Canada.
