Since early this year, the Bengal government had been toying with the idea of divesting its 47 per cent stake in Metro Dairy. The popular Metro ice cream, which enjoys a 40 per cent market share in Calcutta, belongs to Metro Dairy. Keventer Agro, whose bananas are ubiquitous in Calcutta's new-age stores, is a key player in food processing and packaging. Metro Dairy was set up in the 1990s as a tripartite venture between the West Bengal Milk Producers Federations Ltd (Benmilk), Keventer Agro and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), which later sold its 10 per cent stake to Keventer Agro. The proposal to divest Metro Dairy is significant against that backdrop," he said.
