Global technology company Meta Platforms, Inc. has filed an appeal against a Lagos State High Court judgement delivered in favour of human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana. A. Oresanya awarded Falana $25,000 in damages over a video publication alleged to have violated his rights. According to Meta, the trial court erred in treating the case as a fundamental rights enforcement action. The appeal further challenged the trial court’s conclusion that Meta breached provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Act. Meta also faulted the award of $25,000 in damages to Falana, describing it as unjustified and urging the appellate court to set aside both the damages and the entire judgment.
