Energy Minister Megan Woods says she’ll look into a scheme selling green electricity certificates that has been criticised as ineffective and misleading. Yet Woods’ own ministry explored this type of voluntary electricity certificate programme last year and found it makes little positive difference. Other countries run electricity certificates programmes, but they are typically government-regulated – unlike Certified Energy’s. “They can be good for encouraging new renewable electricity generation in countries where there is limited generation of that type. This is not applicable to New Zealand where we have high levels of renewable electricity,” she said.
