“The pandemic definitely spurred me to sign up to the Volunteer Ireland website (i-vol.ie),” Reilly, a university lecturer and mum of two, notes. “Virtual volunteering comes up a lot,” says Amy Woods from Volunteer Ireland. The content of the volunteers’ letters can vary from words of encouragement to simply letting someone else know how their day went. “I’ve taken a couple of calls — the person who requires the service rings through to your phone, and it takes about 30 seconds. “If you want to look at it selfishly, it’s gratifying to do something in 30 seconds, that’s a very simple but helpful gesture.
