IPOH: An 18-year-old mechanic was fined RM5,000 by the Sessions Court for offering RM50 bribe to a policeman when caught not wearing a crash helmet. In mitigation, lawyer Kenny Lai Choe Ken from the National Legal Aid Foundation, told the court his client was a first offender. "His arrest and remand in the lockup is already a lesson for him," he said, adding that the youth earned RM600 a month. DPP Nurul Wahida Jalaluddin from Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC) asked that the court to impose a deterrent sentence since corruption was widespread. Judge S. Indra Nehru ordered the accused to undergo five months' jail if he did not settle the fine.
