Mayoral morning tea adds to Belgium woman's special visit to cityKavinda Herath / StuffMeeting the granddaughters of fallen soldier John Stevens in Invercargill this week gave Belgium school teacher Marijke Vandevyvere an incredible feeling. Twice a month, for the past eight years, Vandevyvere visits the grave of Stevens in Tyne Cot Cemetery in Belgium. "It's quite surreal being here [in Invercargill]," Vandevyvere said. When told Vandevyvere was coming, Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt arranged for a mayoral morning tea for Vandevyvere and the granddaughters on Thursday. When contacted by Stuff earlier this year, Vandevyvere recalled the reasons for choosing Stevens' grave.
