More than any other breed of bike racer, sprinters pride themselves on analysing the road ahead, processing the information and reacting accordingly. So almost as soon as Mark Cavendish crashed out of the Tour de France on stage four, the recalculations started. The crash, 200 metres from the finish line, was deemed to have been caused by the flailing elbow of Peter Sagan, the world champion, who was dramatically kicked off the Tour as a result. The two men have made up but owing to Cavendish’s broken shoulder blade, sadly there is almost no chance of a rematch on the road at this year’s World Championships in Norway in September. The course in Bergen would probably not have been ideal terrain for Cavendish anyway, but…
