March 15 widow, who still faces vitriol, offers a simple solution to combat hate


Just over a month ago, Hamimah Ahmat​ was out for a walk in Christchurch on her own..Ahmat is a small woman and a widow as a result of the March 15 terror attack. The terror attack led for calls for the security agencies and Government to collaborate more with minority groups who often face vitriol and abuse. The introduction of a new hate speech law was discussed as one tool to limit extremists’ most abusive vitriol. The Royal Commission into the Christchurch terror attack recommended strengthening hate crime and speech laws. Ahmat said hate speech laws would be one useful tool to protect often-targetted communities from abuse.
