Interest in racing memorabilia from Timaru-born equine legend Phar Lap drew much interest from New Zealand and the niece of one of the horse's jockey. "The publicity has certainly turned up more Phar Lap material and collectors, one of whom was the niece of jockey Billy Elliott," he said. "She wants to auction off his bridle, and this will come under the hammer with other Phar Lap memorabilia during the Spring Carnival on Melbourne Cup week in October." He said the pair of steel alloy horseshoes, worn in 1931 by the mighty Phar Lap, fetched the highest amount as expected on Sunday. After a sudden and mysterious illness, Phar Lap died in 1932 in California, USA.
