A man is in custody after allegedly firing a gun near a home in West Auckland and threatening to kill on Sunday afternoon. The Armed Response Teams have generated controversy since the trial launched. Police earlier said armed police converged on a busy West Auckland shopping corridor in response to reports of a suspect wielding a gun. Armed Response Teams, which patrol in specialised four-wheel-drive vehicles and are equipped with pistols and rifles, have proved controversial. Police commissioner Mike Bush earlier cited the March 15 terror attacks and rising gun crime as the drivers for the trial.
