Wainuiomata residents are battling the extension of a 'clean' waste dump tucked away in a bush-clad valley, which they fear could pollute their local river. New development at the Wainuiomata Cleanfill was requested by the Hutt City Council, which says record levels of building activity in the city has rapidly increased demand for the site. Wainuiomata local Sally-Ann Moffat said the decision was disappointing but unsurprising. Moffat was one of several Wainuiomata residents who live along Coast Rd, where the cleanfill is located, to make submissions in opposition to the consent.
