Vertonghen, 33, who started his career with Ajax is weighing up his next move after spending eight seasons in North London which came to an end when his contract ran out at the end of the season. The Belgian international has got Inter Milan, Roma and Fiorentina all interested in taking him to the Serie A next season but he will have to take a pay-cut to push through a move. Vertonghen, who was hoping that a Premier League club would come in and offer him a deal, is on Roma’s wanted list to replace Chris Smalling who has returned to Manchester United. Roma are still hoping that they will be able to strike a deal to take the England international back to the Italian capital next season but are struggling to agree terms with United, who are holding out for £18million.
