Malaysia will likely escape El Nino, La Nina

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia will likely escape the El Nino and La Nina phenomenon this year, based on normal readings of the temperature of the sea surface in the Pacific Ocean. Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said regular readings were expected in the projection for the next six months. “If the sea surface temperature gets colder, La Nina is possible, and if otherwise, it will be El Nino. “Currently, the average temperature readings are normal,” he said after chairing the National Haze and Hot Weather Committee meeting today. “Preparation efforts include the construction of check dams (temporary dams) and tubewells at peat soil areas to minimise the risk of fire and to supply water to affected areas.
