Luzija Dance (in red) celebrates the team’s coasting class victory in the Thames Barge Match--Maidenhead employee Luzija Dance and team of nine novice sailors have won the coasting class at the Thames Barge Match on Saturday. The Maidenhead Allied Bakeries apprentice helped to steer the 122-year-old sailing barge 'Gladys' around the Thames Estuary in this year's historic barge race. The Allied Milling & Baking Group owns Gladys, and her skeleton professional crew were joined by nine company novices for the challenge match. Following the race, the crew sailed Gladys back to her home at St Katharine Docks in central London before returning to their jobs supplying the nation with flour, bread and other baked goods. The Thames Sailing Barge Match is now the longest running, regularly organised racing event for traditional sailing barges in the world.
