Maharashtra is yet to release water from its reservoirs into river Krishna to help the drought-hit districts in north-western Karnataka. Two days ago, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured a delegation from Karnataka that it would release water based on availability and sought a ‘water-for-water’ agreement by Karnataka to resolve the issue on a permanent basis. “Last week, Maharashtra released around 9,000 cusecs of water to help mitigate drinking water problems along its border. He is expected to make an announcement about the release of water and the efforts of the State government is convincing Maharashtra, said officials. Water release into the Krishna is expected to help scores of villages along the river bank in Belagavi, Bagalkot, and Vijayapura districts on the Karnataka-Maharashtra border.
