The Mackenzie District Council will vote on the retirement of its Nuclear Weapon Free Zone policy on Tuesday. (File photo)A Nuclear Weapon Free Zone policy in the Mackenzie District written and adopted in 1992 could be retired, a report to be tabled at a council meeting on Tuesday says. “The act does not prohibit nuclear power plants, nuclear research facilities, the use of radioactive isotopes, or other land-based nuclear activities.”The Mackenzie District policy covers only nuclear weapons, not wider nuclear activity. The council will decide on Tuesday whether to leave the Nuclear Weapon Free Zone Policy 1992 in place; retire the policy and opt not to replace it; or request it be reviewed, rewritten and updated. “This may include extension of the policy beyond nuclear weapons,” Goss says.
