MTRC announces pay freeze

MTR Corp has announced a pay freeze for all employees this year, the first time it has done so since 2003. Non-management level employees with a work performance rating of level four to five will receive an additional 1.73 and 2.07 months’ salary, respectively, while those rated at level three will receive an additional 1.4 months’ salary. This news came after the rail giant yesterday said it was expected to record a net loss of around HK$400 million in the first half. It urged the company to promise not to lay off staff, not to force staff to take unpaid leaves and not to reduce salary or staff benefits. It also called for the company to compensate for the pay freeze in the coming years when ridership rebounds.
