MACC accused of exceeding its powers for issuing compound notices to 80 entities allegedly linked to 1MDB

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has been accused of acting beyond its legal powers (ultra vires) for issuing compound notices to 80 entities over funds allegedly linked to 1MDB. On Oct 7, MACC issued compound notices to 80 entities, including political parties, which are believed to have received monies from 1MDB in an attempt to recover about RM420mil. It is said that the entities received between RM500,000 and RM134mil from 1MDB. The MIC headquarters, Parti Rakyat Sarawak, Kedah PPP, Kedah Gerakan as well as Selangor and Kedah MCA have also been issued with compound notices. Compound notices were also issued to five organisations, 23 companies as well as nine individuals including former CIMB Group chairman Datuk Seri Nazir Razak and former Felda chairman Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad.
