Berkshire, £3.5mWhen the owners of grade II* listed Chieveley House, in the village of the same name, decided to have their 2.4-acre garden overhauled, they called in the big guns. The landscape designer Arne Maynard — famous for grand projects at historic piles such as Haddon Hall, Derbyshire — created a series of highly structured, flowing rooms, with zones for veggies and flowers, and lashings of topiary in the formal areas. (The new custodians should keep an eye out for box blight and rampaging caterpillars.) Built in 1716 in the heart of the village, which is a short drive from Newbury, the six-bedroom home has impeccably classical decor, with a primrose yellow dining room. A renovated one-bedroom coach house is included in the price.
