Lower Hutt resthome workers to strike over work hours

Workers at a Lower Hutt resthome are preparing this week for the first of three strikes over lack of certainty around work hours. Members of the E tū care and support union at Woburn Masonic Resthome will stop work between 8.30am and 1pm on Tuesday in an effort to force resolution to their work conditions dispute. E tū organiser Robert Ibell said workers were unhappy that management were not able to meet their demands at a last ditch mediation meeting last Thursday. Masonic Villages Trust chief executive Warick Dunn said they were confident they could weather the strike without too much disruption. About 19 of 35 health care assistants were in the union and four were rostered on to work the first day of the strike.
